Joint Statement and Urgent Appeal to Contain Monkeypox, Malnutrition, and Measles Outbreaks in Darfur

May 18, 2026

Kampala – Nyala – New York

We have been following with grave concern the alarming escalation of the health and humanitarian crisis in Darfur, particularly the rapid spread of monkeypox in the “Dira” district of Jebel Marrah, South Darfur State. According to announcement was released by the civil authority of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nour, which confirmed new cases among the population. Initial reports indicate that the number of cases has already exceeded 250.

In the same context, “MSF” announced an outbreak of acute malnutrition among children and women in the Al-Salam and Kalma IDPs camps in South Darfur State. This comes as a measles epidemic continues to spread widely in several areas of North and South Darfur States, amidst a near-total collapse of the health sector. This situation has been exacerbated by the decline in healthcare services and emergency interventions during this crisis.

The health situation in Darfur has witnessed a catastrophic and alarming deterioration due to urgent need of medicines, vaccines, and medical solutions, the near complete absence of diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and the destruction of health facilities and medical centers.
Furthermore, the emergency humanitarian response has been inadequate compared to the scale of the escalating crisis.

Field reports indicate that current interventions remain limited and insufficient, raising the specter of a widespread health catastrophe that threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians, particularly children, the elderly, women, and internally displaced persons in conflict zones.

The ongoing war, the difficulty of humanitarian access, and the collapse of the health facilities due to the conflict have all contributed to creating an ideal environment for the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases, at a time when civilians have been left to face death and disease without enough protection or healthcare.

Therefore, we declare and appeal for the following:-

1- declaration of Jebel Marra and the surrounding areas in Darfur as a health epidemic zone requiring an immediate and urgent response.

2- An appeal to regional and international humanitarian organizations and the international community to intervene immediately and urgently to prevent the disaster from worsening and to take the health situation in Darfur as a state of emergency.

3- A call upon the fact authorities in Sudan to open safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

We emphasize that any delay in addressing these epidemics will only exacerbate the suffering of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Jebel Marrah and Darfur.
We also hold the international community morally and humanely responsible for taking immediate action to contain these epidemics and protect civilians now and in the future.
